La Jouachere - Our Family Farm
Traditional Sustainable Farming For The 21st Century - Direct Sales of Organic Lamb
La Jouachere is our family farm purchased in 2004. Situated overlooking the beautiful Vienne river (Department 86) in the Poitou Charente, France, we have renovated the buildings and revitalised the land to form our family home and heart of our family business raising sheep organically.
La Jouachere and our three flocks of sheep (Black Welsh Mountain, Jacob, Charolais cross) are certified as being Organic:
- Outdoor reared. Our pastures offer a wide variety of grasses and wild flowers while thick and tall natural hedges encourage wildlife.
- Low intensivity of stocking rates where we don’t seek to maximise the performance of animals or land.
- Our flock of Welsh Black Mountain sheep has been selected to compliment the geography and climate of our farm in support of our low intensive approach. It is the only flock in France registered with the Welsh Black Society and all sheep attained the highest genotype ratings.
- Hunting is also banned and a contract has been signed with the Ligue Protection Ouiseax (LPO) to underline our commitment to protect biodiversity.
Our approach can be summed up: Sustainability, ecology and economics can work hand in hand when you are not seeking to force the performance of your land or of your animals. Our sustainable farming practices are as much about practicality as a reaction to modern mechanized agriculture whose advance has lead to the demise of the small farm selling its produce locally.
- We sell direct to the public and pre orders will be taken during the year for collection in December and in the run up to Easter
- Pre order a whole lamb, butchered and supplied for collection
- Eur 12.50 per kilo
- Typical size will be between 12 to 18 kgs
